It has been both an honor and a privilege to serve as your president for our 2016-17 calendar year. I can hardly believe that my term will soon be ending. I guess it is true that times flies when you are having fun! I encourage you to make plans to attend our upcoming Annual Meeting on June 7, 2017. This is a great opportunity for you to meet our incoming president Donna M. Joseph as well as our new incoming board members. You will also have an opportunity to meet our new Corporate Advisory Board. Together we will highlight our past years accomplishments as well as hear from Donna as she shares her vision for her presidency. See you on June 7th!

There is a lot happening in June!

First Friday’s Ladies Over Lunch~ Friday, June 2, 2017, 11:30 am  Gather monthly with like-minded friends at the Skyline Club located at 2000 Town Center, Southfield, MI. Discuss current events, inspiring topics and industry specifics with NAWBO and Skyline Club members while dining at the Chef's table. $20 inclusive per person. This month enjoy conversation and lunch as discuss top strategies for personal development. RSVP online here but you will pay when you arrive at the Skyline Club.

Annual Meeting~ Wednesday, June 7th, 5 pm to 8 pm., Power of Innovation, GM Heritage Center, Warren, MI. Mark your calendar as we recap the year and welcome our incoming board members. Businesses will have an opportunity to have vendor tables (limited number). Not open to the public, the GM Heritage Center houses over 600 concept cars, special-interest styling/performance one-offs along with significant race cars and milestone production vehicles, representing GM’s rich history of innovation of the past 100 years. NWBOC ACCESS Detroit 2017 conference~ Thursday, June 8 & Friday June 9 at the MGM Grand. NWBOC is a third party certifying agency for women, veteran, and minority owned businesses that specializes in providing procurement resources for securing government and corporate contracts. NWBOC’s mission is to grant ACCESS to business owners – specifically, to create a path that leads to more opportunities, greater success and stronger business relationships.This year’s conference was designed to grant ACCESS via seminars and networking opportunities that focus on business development strategies and one-on-one talks with government and corporate buyers. Bonding and Education Informational Meeting Wednesday, June 14, 2017 ~ Time: 9:30am – 3 pm, Michigan Department of Transportation – Detroit Operations and Service Center (DOSC), Detroit, MI. The Bonding and Education Program (BEP)  is offered by, The US Department of Transportation (USDOT), in partnership with Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), Surety and Fidelity Association of America (SFAA), and the Southwest Detroit Business Association (SDBA), go here for further details.

Rita BrownA passionate advocate for parity, opportunity and advancement for women and underrepresented minorities in STEM, STEAM and the building industry, Ms. Brown is a nationally award winning writer, entrepreneur and building industry professional. Among her current affiliations, Brown is a Board of Trustee of NAWBO/EXCEL, Industry Procurement Lead, Habitat for Humanity, Oakland County, member, Associated General Contractors [AGC] National Steering Committee - Diversity/Inclusion, member of the Michigan Apprenticeship Steering Committee [MASCI] and Immediate Past President of the National Association of Women in Construction [NAWIC], Detroit, Chair of the NAWIC National Expansion Taskforce.

She brings 25 years of industry and entrepreneurial experience and is a recognized professional specializing in structural and misc. steel services, diversity and inclusion business strategies and universal green design applications. Brown is the CEO/President of BCC+, Green Living Enterprises and Great Lakes Organic. She is also the founder and National Director for Project Accelerate [], an altruistic program introducing, integrating and reinforcing construction, engineering, trades and business experiences for the building industry. This program was given the honor of participating and presenting successes in the White House policy discussion this past September in Washington, D.C. The program has now grown to multiple states and is supported by a growing coalition of industry, education, trades and business entities.
